When Collective Bias asked for bloggers who wanted to go ice cream shopping, I said, "Yes please!" They wanted us to explore the idea of picnics and ice cream. Yesterday was the perfect day--super hot, so I decided to head over to Walmart to pick up items for an impromptu backyard picnic.
When I first read about American Terroir: Savoring the Flavors of Our Woods, Waters, and Forests by Rowan Jacobsen, I thought it was going to be a catalog of what areas are known for what foods. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this book goes much deeper than that, calling us to develop a relationship to the foods around us.

I had a bag of spinach to use up and no idea what to do with it. I thought hmm, pasta sounds good tonight. So I searched the internet and found my inspiration from Aggie's Kitchen.
One of the ways I prepare for a cross-cultural experience is to remind myself of the worldview that I have. I am an American, and as such I have values and beliefs that seem odd to the rest of the world. I need to be aware of them (many are subconscious) so that I do not inadvertently judge the people who I will be meeting.
