Eating Local: Cookbook Review

You are here: Home / Mind / book review / Eating Local: Cookbook Review
July 3, 2010 by Wendy Hammond

So, I've been dying to review Eating Local: The Cookbook Inspired by America's Farmers for awhile now, but I wanted to wait until I had a chance to try some of the recipes. With CSA season starting, I had the chance to sample a few.

So, I’ve been dying to review Eating Local: The Cookbook Inspired by America’s Farmers for awhile now, but I wanted to wait until I had a chance to try some of the recipes. With CSA season starting, I had the chance to sample a few.

Here’s a video that talks about why the author wrote this book:

Part of what I love about this book is that it is written from the perspective of CSAs. The photos of the recipes are gorgeous, and various CSA farms are featured.

From the publisher’s website:

One hundred and fifty easy-to-follow recipes focus on using locally grown ingredients from farms engaged in community-supported agriculture (CSA) as well as farmersโ€™ markets.

The cookbook is organized alphabetically by main ingredient to make it easy for you to figure out what to make with the arugula from your CSA box or the abundance of strawberries at peak season from your farmersโ€™ market.

Eating Local also takes you on a wonderful editorial and photographic journey to 10 small farms across the country. An up-close look at these noteworthy farms and the people who cultivate them reveals how hard work and a passion for sustainability yield wholesome and delicious products perfect for eating and living locally. Hardcover; 304 pages.

These are not your run of the mill recipes. Many of them use specialty oils (and describe how to make them yourself!) and cheeses. Recipes like Stuffed Artichokes with Pine Nuts and Currants and Mexican Pork Stew with Tomatillos use simple ingredients but are complex enough to satisfy foodies.

I loved just reading through this cookbook; I can’t wait to make more of the recipes in it.

Congratulations Shelly, the winner of the giveaway!

Disclosure: The publisher provided a free copy of this book for me to review. It in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

I have had my eye on this cookbook. I am so excited to hear a good review as there as so many “local” cookbooks out there that are completely unrealistic or bogus. My family recently went through the kitchen transformation to “local or nothing” and this accounts for 85% of our kitchen. It’s exciting, but we are still learning. We have had to teach ourselves if it’s not available now you have to wait (and we are canning and freezing now in preparation for the cold months) and it has allowed us to be more creative and come together as a family. We all go to the farmers markets (my son’s favorite 3 days of the week), we grow our own food, and we create together. I would love this cookbook to keep the motivation going and to enhance the creativity in the kitchen, plus I love reading cookbooks.

I would love to learn how to cook more vegetables and I am thinking of joining our local CSA in the FALL (I’m in S. Florida). The only thing holding me back, is what to do with all the vegetables I’ve never heard of.

I would love to win this book because my goal for the summer has been to buy more local produce! I live in the Poconos of PA, and we have plenty of local farms, and I am working on supporting as many of them as I can find! However, as you know, some of the stuff you find at farm markets is not like the stuff you are used to, and I would like to find ways to use this stuff to feed myself and my husband!

My almost 6 year old daughter has multiple health issues that started around the age of 18 months. This past March, we finally got the diagnosis I have been trying to get to for four years…. ulcerative colitis. Now we’re following the Specific Carbohydrate Diet in an effort to see if it can help relieve some of the symptoms of her illnesses, and this means I am cooking ALOT – spending most of my time in the kitchen. I need inspiration and would love to win this book!

My husband and I have recently been inspired to eat only locally grown, organic foods for an entire month. We are tracking our progress at: http://locallygrownmeghan.blogspot.com/
We have so many hopes for this month but not a lot of recipes to go with them! Most nights I end up just guessing and throwing things together. With fresh, in season produce it’s hard to make a meal that doesn’t taste good, but we’d still love an actual recipe to follow every now and again!
