Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Bulk Food Storage

You are here: Home / Other / essay / Kitchen Tip Tuesday: Bulk Food Storage
May 18, 2010 by Wendy Hammond

I’ve blogged before about my dilemma with storing bulk flour and such. I finally found my solution–plastic containers from Gordon Foods. They are professional food grade, and super inexpensive. Yay!

I bought a label maker so I can keep everything straight, and learned a helpful tip: Do not just put the label on the lid. Put it on the side too. Because if you’re in the middle of baking, it’s easy to forget which lid goes with which container.

The other tip I thought of is if you buy items in plastic bags (which is how a lot of my specialty flours come in at the health food store), you can carefully peel it off and re-stick it to the plastic container.

Finally, I have also used large empty cardboard boxes from Costco to organize my various kitchen tools on shelves. Just slap a label on the side and my popcorn box is now a holder for my mixer accessories. And it’s free!

Hey! I just bought that exact same flour at HH a few days ago! I needed it to make my whole wheat crackers!!! I will definitely check out Gordon Foods…right now I am using old metal cans…like the ones potato chips used to come in!

Great tip to put the label on the top and side…I would totally be one to mix them all up.
    Thanks for joining my party!

How do you get the Gordon’s containers? I went to the site but I didn’t see anything about them selling the containers.
    TIA

      Hi Veee,

I bought it at their store. If you don’t have a location near you, perhaps you could try a restaurant supply store. I did see similar containers in the King Arthur Flour catalog but they were a bit more pricey.

This is a great tip! I’ve been wanting to start buying in bulk, but I do always wonder how I’ll store it!

Have you seen Pioneer Woman’s built in flour and sugar drawers? So cool!
