Mostly Oats Granola

You are here: Home / Food / Recipes / Mostly Oats Granola
February 15, 2010 by Wendy Hammond

If you had asked me two years ago whether I had ever cooked or baked with wheat germ or oat bran, I would have given you the side eye. For starters, I didn’t bake or cook that much. Secondly, I would have assumed you’d have to go to an overpriced health food to get those items.

My how times have changed. The health food store is still overpriced for packaged/processed goods, but a downright bargain for bulk items and spices. And I love Mostly Oats Granola from Simply in Season.
This recipe takes quite a bit less baking than the other one, and throws together in a snap. The nutrition information isn’t bad ether.

6 cups rolled oats
1 cup shredded coconut
1 cup wheat germ
3/4 cup walnut pieces
1/2 cup sunflower seeds
1/2 cup honey
1/3 cup oil
1/3 cup water
1 tsp vanilla
1 cup raisins

1. Combine dry ingredients; then combine wet ingredients and pour over oat mixture. Stir well, spread in a thin layer on baking sheets.

2. Bake in a preheated oven at 325 F for 10 minutes; stir, bake 5 minutes; stir again, and bake 3-5 minutes. Cool. Store in airtight containers.
The verdict: In hindsight, it would have been good if I could have made this and the other granola recipe side by side. Just by looking at the ingredients, I anticipated this to be good – but not *as* good – as the other recipe. In actuality, it was good but needed a lot of raisins for extra flavor. The photo above was taken before I added the raisins.

I love oat bran. And meal, and flour, and just about any way it comes. Maybe it’s my Scots heritage?

Thanks for visiting the blog today. I just noticed that you linked today’s post. Thank you!

I am so with you on this one, if you had suggested a year ago I would be making my own granola I would have called you crazy, but now I can’t imagine it any other way! Homemade Granola is the best.

I have to avoid gluten so wheat germ is out for me, but maybe I can come up with a good gluten free substitute so I can serve something like this to my gluten free boyfriend. 🙂

I love how oats are more nutritious and filling than most other grains.

Hi! I came over from Slightly Indulgent Tuesday. I LOVE oats and granola. I will have to try your recipe. I’m also GF so I would have to omit the wheat germ, but I bet it will still be yummy.
