Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil Giveaway!

You are here: Home / Mind / book review / Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil Giveaway!
July 2, 2010 by Wendy Hammond

*Note: It’s the Friday before a long weekend. I know lots of us are procrastinating enjoying time on the internet before the long weekend so I thought I’d post this today!

I’ve been thinking a lot about oil lately. No, not the BP oil spill! Cooking oil, to be precise. Many recipes call for olive oil, yet I know it has a low smoke point which apparently is bad. Olive oil is more for salads, pesto, etc. And then there’s canola oil. Did you know that canola is not the name of a plant, seed, etc.? It’s a genetically engineered plant of some sort.

I’ve been hearing a lot about coconut oil and wanted to give it a try. Lo and behold, Tropical Traditions offered me a FREE quart of it to try! I’ve been using it in stir fries and for scrambling eggs ever since, and although the jar is a bit messy to pour from, and it sort of solidified in the cute little jar I bought thinking that would help, it does work quite nicely for cooking.

The nice people at Tropical Traditions have also agreed to sponsor a giveaway! You too can enter to win a free quart of coconut oil by doing the following. Note that you need to submit a separate comment for each entry.

  1. Subscribe to the Tropical Traditions email newsletter (required) and indicate below that you did
  2. Follow Tropical Traditions on Twitter and indicate below that you did
  3. Visit this website http://www.freecoconutrecipes.com/index.htm and post a comment saying which recipe you’d try if you won

This contest is open until July 8, 2010, midnight EST. Open to US and Canada.
Disclaimer: Tropical Traditions provided me with a free sample of this product to review, and I was under no obligation to review it if I so chose.  Nor was I under any obligation to write a positive review or sponsor a product giveaway in return for the free product. Note for Canadian bloggers: Tropical Traditions is not responsible for customs or duties that Canada may charge if you decide to participate in this Tropical Traditions sponsored blog giveaway.

Actually, according wikipedia, canola IS the name of a plant.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canola
“Canola is one of two cultivars of rapeseed or Brassica campestris (Brassica napus L. and B. campestris L.).”

Also, as far as my research indicates, it’s low-quality olive oil that has a low smoke point. High-quality olive oil actually has a high smoke point comparable with canola oil.

      July 2, 2010 at 5:27 pm

I think that cultivar means genetically engineered, yes?
