Whether you’re single or a couple, here are two great Valentine’s Day Cookbooks!

You are here: Home / Mind / book review / Whether you’re single or a couple, here are two great Valentine’s Day Cookbooks!
February 6, 2011 by Wendy Hammond

Consider this the obligatory Valentine's Day post. I'm not really "into" Hallmark Holidays, but these two cookbooks are really fun and are a great gift to yourself or someone you know who could use a pick-me-up.

Consider this the obligatory Valentine’s Day post. I’m not really “into” Hallmark Holidays, but these two cookbooks are really fun and are a great gift to yourself or someone you know who could use a pick-me-up.

First up is The Happy Baker: A Girl’s Guide To Emotional Baking by Erin Bolger who blogs at http://thehappybakerchick.com. I knew I would love this book when the bio on the back said, “she’s come a long way from the days of making out with long-haired rockers in the middle of a cornfield.” I can SO identify with that!

Seriously, she is an awesome writer and the four chapters (the early years; they break it, you bake it; the good, the bad & the fugly; and single & sassy) are an easy, lighthearted read with delicious recipes to boot. Recipes have gorgeous photos and names like “Me and My Cookies Are So Over You” and “Bite My Peanut Brittle, Bi-atch.” If my single friends are nice to me I might let them borrow this cookbook, just because it is so funny and true.

Next up is Small-Batch Baking for Chocolate Lovers by Debby Maugans. For those of us who don’t have children or a lot of willpower, this book is the perfect solution because you only make a few baked goods at a time. Sure, coworkers may be disappointed, but your waistline and taste buds will thank you!

The book begins by giving some tips for baking in small batches, then provides recipes divided into the following categories:

  • Classic Indulgences: Beautiful Small Cakes and Cupcakes
  • The Uppercrust: Pies, Tarts and Cheesecakes
  • Cookie Bliss: Irresistible Treats
  • Ooey-Gooey Goodness: Luscious Puddings and Souffle’s
  • Bodacious Breads: Melt-in-Your-Mouth Muffins, Scones, Shortcakes, and Loaves
  • Better with Chocolate
  • Holiday Decadence
  • and Liquid Pleasures

There are so many recipes I’d love to try; check back later this week where I’ll share the recipe for Cinnamon Chocolate Scones.

Happy baking!
