OK cooking magazines, stop teasing me with your photos of steamed asparagus and strawberry shortcake. Here in Michigan we have at least three more months before the ground gives up anything new. To celebrate winter, here are some of my favorite soups & stews.

Very important point of local food journalism — when focusing on “use-what-ya’-got,” January – May gets kind of lean! Most people are okay w/ exotic ingreds for the holidays, but finding recipe features for Feb-Mar & Apr-May feels a tad desperate! Root and tuber veggies are great; hard-shelled, long-lasting winter squashes are, too; it’s helpful that most local organic meat producers sell frozen all year long, as well. Another great local ingredient: dried beans. MI ranks as #1 producer in the country & Michigan Bean Commission is a veritable treasure trove of info and recipes. (I think Fran Arbogast-Carlson of Howard City still chairs the group. A registered dietician, her family has been growing beans since 1860, and I seriously think she could talk an hour or two and not run out of bean recipes!)

I love a good soup — we just had a soup supper at church tonight and they had a wonderful Beef Barley and a Chicken and Rice — so good!

I’m a new follower from the Heavenly Homemakers meme 🙂

Hi Wendy, I am with you! It is still too cold out to even think of those delicate fresh recipes of late spring! It was 28 degrees here today in the sun! I really love the variety of warming soups and stews you have here and I thank you for sharing them on the hearth and soul hop! All the best! Alex

We’re getting some of the Spring stuff out here in California, but it’s not really at it’s peak yet. Most of the Spring fruits and veg just don’t quite have their full flavor, even thought the grocery stores peddle them.

Living on the foggy coast here, soup is always in season. My girls love Matzoh Ball soup the best. My favorite is a classic French Onion or a good New England Clam Chowder.

Mmmmm…Chicken and Chickpea sounds really good.

Always a pleasure to have you be a part of “A Little Birdie Told Me…” Tuesday at Rook No. 17

I need to master French Onion – I love it in restaurants but haven’t made it myself yet.
