Getting the Pantry Ready for Spring

Last year spring came early; this year, it shows up for a few hours and promptly goes and hides when the snow appears. Nevertheless, I've been making a conscious effort to change what I've been eating, go through my pantry, and get ready for gardening and CSA season.

Cleaning the Pantry

(and the refrigerator . . . and the freezer). Now is a good time to go through and toss stuff that is past its prime. Start spring with a clean, shiny new refrigerator, pantry, and freezer. Wondering if something is still good or not? StillTasty is a handy website that will tell you whether you should keep or toss it. Once the freezer and refrigerator are emptied, give it a good cleaning. Here’s a handy how to clean a freezer checklist and a how to clean a refrigerator checklist from Real Simple.

Restocking the Pantry

The following suggestions are from Laura Burkett, my health coach:

Seasonal Vegetables
Asparagus, sprouts, leafy greens, artichokes, beets, bell peppers, broccoli, garlic, cabbage

Spring Friendly Grains
Amaranth, Barley, Buckwheat, Corn, Millet, Quinoa, Rye, Brown long grain rice

Spring Friendly Protein
Chicken, Turkey, Fresh Water fish

What are some of your favorite ways to incorporate spring into your eating?

It’s Autumn here and I’ve been stocking up for soups and stews. I cleaned out my entire pantry recently after getting pantry moths. I hate those buggers. 🙂
