  • Serves: 8
  • Category: Breakfast

Ingredients

  • 2 cups packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup butter, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 3 cups sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 2 cups chopped dates
  • 16 ounces dark beer
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Cream together brown sugar, butter and vanilla in a large bowl. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Set aside.
  3. In another bowl sift together the cinnamon, allspice, cloves, flour, baking soda and salt. Dust the walnuts and dates in a small bit of the flour mixture.
  4. Add the rest of the flour mixture alternately with the beer to the creamed sugar, stirring after each addition. Spoon the batter into a very well greased and floured tube pan.
  5. Bake at 350F for 1 1/4 hours or until a toothpick inserted into center of cake comes out clean.
  6. Let the cake stand 5 minutes and then invert it onto a wire rack to cool. Remove from the pan. Transfer the coffee cake to a serving dish. Dust the top with powdered sugar.
